Review

Dragon Age 2, developed by BioWare and published by Electronic Arts, is the sequel to the critically acclaimed Dragon Age: Origins. Released in 2011, it takes a departure from its predecessor in several significant ways, from its narrative structure to its gameplay mechanics.

The game follows the story of Hawke, a refugee who rises to become the Champion of Kirkwall. Unlike Dragon Age: Origins, which spans multiple regions and tells an epic tale of saving the world, Dragon Age 2 is much more focused, set almost entirely within the city of Kirkwall and its immediate surroundings. The story is told through a framed narrative, with Varric, one of Hawke’s companions, recounting the events to a Chantry Seeker. This structure allows for a more personal and character-driven narrative, although it can sometimes feel constrained compared to the sprawling epic of the first game.

One of Dragon Age 2’s greatest strengths is its characters. Hawke is a fully voiced protagonist with customizable dialogue options, allowing players to shape their personality and relationships. The companions, from the charming rogue Varric to the brooding mage Anders, are well-developed and offer rich backstories and complex moral dilemmas. The interactions and banter between companions add depth and humor to the game, making the player feel truly invested in their fates.

Dragon Age 2 features a more action-oriented combat system than its predecessor. Battles are faster-paced, with a greater emphasis on direct control and flashy abilities. While this makes the combat more dynamic and visually engaging, it has been criticized for being repetitive, especially given the reuse of environments. The game also introduces a simplified skill tree and inventory system, which streamlines the experience but may disappoint players who enjoyed the more intricate customization options in Origins.

Dragon Age 2 places a significant emphasis on player choices, which can have far-reaching consequences on the story and its characters. The game explores themes of power, prejudice, and the struggle for control, often forcing players to make morally ambiguous decisions. However, some players have felt that the choices do not have as wide-ranging an impact on the game’s world as they did in Origins.

Dragon Age 2 is a bold experiment that succeeds in some areas while falling short in others. Its focus on a single protagonist and setting allows for a more intimate and character-driven story, but it comes at the cost of the epic scope and variety that defined its predecessor. The engaging characters and moral dilemmas make it a memorable experience, despite the repetitive environments and streamlined mechanics. For fans of the series, it offers a different but still compelling journey in the Dragon Age universe.
