Review
The game follows Rookie One, a Rebel pilot investigating mysterious spacecraft disappearances near the Dreighton Nebula, eventually uncovering the Empire’s secret cloaking project for TIE Fighters.
The game combines full-motion video sequences with interactive elements, where players control the protagonist through various missions. This mix of cinematic storytelling and gameplay was ground breaking at the time.
While the game received praise for its high-quality video and Star Wars ambience, it was criticized for its controls and linear gameplay. The flight controls were often described as unresponsive, making the game feel more like an interactive movie than a fully-fledged game. Additionally, the acting and story were seen as subpar compared to other Star Wars media.
Commercially, “Rebel Assault II” was successful, selling over half a million copies by 1997. However, it has not aged well in the eyes of critics, often being listed among the weaker entries in the Star Wars gaming franchise.
For fans of the Star Wars universe, “Rebel Assault II” offers nostalgic value and an interesting look at mid-90s game design, but those seeking deep gameplay mechanics might find it lacking.
